Computational methods related with the analysis of fault populations (striated planes) are used currently for the characterisation ofthe deformation in intraplate zones. Although these methods are quite successful, we propose the use of an alternative methodology based on the statistical analysis ofthe spatial distribution of jointed planes: the JOINTS program. Its application to a sector ofthe Betic foreland (Central Spain) has proportioned some interesting insights about the neotectonic stress configuration, which are in accordance with data obtained from fault population analysis
