El trabajador social como recurso en un caso de Síndrome de Diógenes

Abstract

Los Servicios Sociales Comunitarios, una Unidad de Trabajo Social, reciben una denuncia vecinal, a través de la policía local, exponiendo la posible situación de insalubridad de una vivienda ocupada por una señora y su hija, esta última hace años que no ha sido vista por el barrio. Se solicita intervención en el caso ante una posible situación de riesgo de ambas y el estado de insalubridad del domicilio que ya está afectando el resto de los vecinos. Eran personas afectadas por el Síndrome de Diógenes, con la existencia de una historia familiar caracterizada por: aislamiento, inexistencia de apoyo familiar, presencia de enfermedades mentales no diagnosticadas, negación de la realidad y la resistencia a recibir ningún tipo de ayuda del exterior. Fueron numerosas las dificultades encontradas (obtención de información, seguimiento, supervisión, falta de red de apoyo,…) para iniciar y formalizar el proceso de intervención. Finalmente las personas afectadas "aceptaron" nuestra mediación y algunos de los recursos puestos a su disposición, consiguiéndose restaurar el estado higiénico de la vivienda En todo el proceso fue necesaria la implicación de todos los agentes intervinientes, desde los propios usuarios hasta otros profesionales, organismos y agentes no formales, sin los cuales las intervenciones se habrían quedado incompletas.

Community Social Services, a Social Work Unit, received a complaint from neighbors, through the local police, explaining the possible situation of unhealthiness of a house occupied by a lady and her daughter who has not been seen in the neighbourhood for years but there is evidence that she is living with her mother at home. Intervention is sought in case of a possible risk for both and because of the situation of unhealthiness of the home which is already affecting therest of the neighbors. They were affected by Diogenes syndrome, the existence of a family history characterized by isolation, lack of family support, presence of mental illness is not diagnosed, denial and resistance to receiving any outside help. Numerous difficulties were encountered (information gathering, monitoring, supervision, lack of family support, education for change ...) to initiate and formalize the process of intervention. Finally the people affected "accepted" our mediation and some of the resources at their disposal, were able to restore hygienic housing. Throughout the process it was necessary to involve all the players involved, from the users themselves to other professionals, agencies and non-formal agents because, without the performance of each of them intervention would have been incomplete.
