Pensamiento estratégico del espionaje y contraespionaje en la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939). Actividades del SIEP y SIPM

Abstract

En la Guerra Civil española se fue configurando un pensamiento estratégico centrado en las labores de inteligencia cuya actividad fue canalizada a través de improvisados servicios de información. Tanto republicanos como nacionales recurrieron con frecuencia a estos peculiares organismos con el fin de conocer las intenciones de sus adversarios. De entre estos servicios destacó el Servicio de Información Especial Periférico (SIEP), integrado en el Ejército Popular y concebido esencialmente para recabar información en la retaguardia enemiga. Sus logros fueron múltiples, si bien, tuvieron que sobreponerse a las circunstancias desfavorables de la guerra y, concretamente, al hostigamiento del Servicio de Información y Policía Militar (SIPM), un transcendente organismo del Ejército franquista en labores de espionaje y contraespionaje.

During the Spanish Civil War, strategic thinking focusing on intelligence work began to take shape, with this activity being channeled through improvised information services. Both the Republican as well as the Nationalist forces often resorted to these peculiar bodies in an effort to discover their adversaries’ intentions. Prominent amongst these services was the Peripheral Special Information Service (SIEP), which formed part of the Popular army and which was specifically conceived to gather information on the enemy’s rear-guard. Made up of young volunteers, they achieved many successes, even though they had to face the unfavourable circumstances of the war and, notably, persecution from the Military Police Information Service (SIPM), a National army body dedicated to espionage, gathering military information, and counterespionage and which proved to be an extremely hostile adversary for the SIEP in addition to providing support that was key to the interests of Franco’s army.
