La vita dopo la morte... Un primo approccio archeologico alla cripta della chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci (Agrigento, Sicilia)

Abstract

Primera aproximación arqueológica a los resultados de la intervención realizada entre 2002 y 2004 en Santa Maria dei Greci, un edificio religioso de gran interés artístico, cultural y científico en el centro histórico de Agrigento (Sicilia). Entre otros aspectos, que analizamos en el marco de nuestra Tesis de Doctorado, las excavaciones sacaron a la luz un mundo funerario de gran interés, que abarca una parte importante del desarrollo diacrónico del conjunto y adopta diversas formas, destacando la gran cripta funeraria de mediados del siglo XVIII, bajo la nave central. Oculta durante mucho tiempo, ofrece un fascinante repertorio de posibilidades a la hora de interpretar su historia, su tipología, las creencias que motivaron su construcción y los usos allí desarrollados

With this contribution we intend to propose a reflection on the results of the ongoing investigation, on some interesting findings of great scientific interest, which came to light between 2002 and 2004, during the archaeological excavation works carried out inside a religious building of great artistic, cultural and scientific interest, the church of Sant Mary dei Greci, in the historical centre of Agrigento (Sicily). The excavation campaign, carried out on an area never before subjected to archaeological investigation, has achieved results above expectations. In fact, an interesting funeral system has come to light, buried for centuries, and until then unknown, which occupies the entire space of the church
