The new geostrategic outlook that emerged following the end of the cold war led
many European countries to terminate the legal requirement for their citizens to complete a period
of military service. Notwithstanding this change, in recent years there has been a serious debate over
this issue, leading to the reintroduction of military service by some governments. Justifications cited
for this policy change include the threat from Russia, terrorist attacks, the arrival of Donald Trump
as President of the United States of America, the lack of professional soldiers and the lack of a
national identity, all of which, to a greater or lesser degree have repercussions for Spain
