Sodium polytungstate is a new product that can be used for purposes of separation of heavy minerals. The solution is nontoxic and it is recomended as a substitute for tetrabromoetane (TBE) and bromoform, considered as hazardous substances to handle in laboratory. In this paper we point out the advantages and missadvantages observed in its use as well as the laboratory procedures for its management. We also present advances that al/ow us to avoid the problems coming from the slow filtration rates ofsodium polytungstatees_ES
