Gaby, una historia verdadera. Por un sistema educativo normalizado para las personas discapacitadas

Abstract

Gaby, una historia verdadera, 1987, es una película de gran interés para su utilización en las aulas, que se puede enmarcar en un modelo de tratamiento de la discapacidad basado en la normalización de la persona. Gabriela Brimmer fue una poetisa mexicana nacida con una parálisis cerebral tetrapléjica grave de origen perinatal que le impedía cualquier movimiento o expresión menos el de su pie izquierdo. Gaby luchó, apoyada por su nana Florencia, una indígena mexicana, por la coeducación, la libertad por estudiar en centros de estudios normalizados y por su intento de acceder a un nivel máximo en los estudios, pues ingresó a las carreras de sociología y periodismo en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), aunque no pudo finalizar sus estudios debido a las innumerables barreras arquitectónicas y de todo tipo que encontró a su paso. El film, basado con fidelidad en una persona real convierte, tanto a la protagonista como el recurso cinematográfico en doblemente interesante, pues permite analizar una película atrayente y sugestiva y, además, adentrarse en el personaje real, del que existe mucha información, e investigar sobre su persona y obra, la sociedad en la que vivió y el tratamiento de ese tipo de discapacidades

Gaby (1987) is a film, based on a true story, of great interest for its use inside classrooms, which can be framed as a method of disability treatment based on the normalisation of the person. Gabriela Brimmer was a Mexican poetess born with a severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy with a prenatal origin that prevented her from doing any kind of movement or expression, except with her left foot. Gaby fought for coeducation, freedom to study in any standardised educational centre, and for her attempt to access to the highest level of education, supported by her nana Florencia, a native Mexican woman. She even entered the degrees of sociology and journalism in the National Autonomous University of México (UNAM), despite the fact that she could not finish her studies, due to the innumerable architectonic barriers and everything she found in her path. The film, based faithfully on a real person, changes not only the protagonist; but also the cinematographic means to make it even more interesting, since it allows us to analyse an appealing and suggestive picture. In addition, it allows us to go deep into the real character, of whom we have a lot of information, and investigate about her individual and work, the society in which she lived and the treatment of these kind of disabilities.
