Zn-rich staurolite has been found in a metapelite rock with low-grade metamorphic assemblage, in the Salobreña Unit (Alpujárride Complex, Betic Cordillera). The chemical composition (4-6 wt.% ZnO) and the textural relationships of the Zn-rich staurolite are described. Estimated conditions of P=8-4 Kb and T=425-475°C for the staurolite growth episode are proposed. The relatively high Zn concentration in the studied staurolite could be a determinant factor for the stabilization of this mineral at low temperature.
