Critica del estratotipo puro

Abstract

Natural history was pervaded by platonic (typological) thinking in its origins. Now, biology and geology, its descendent disciplines, have sometimes the trace of such philosophical foundation. The stratotype definition (e.g. the old concept of holostratotype) is an example of this. However, variety is the norm in Nature. There is no type section including all the possible guide fossils for a specific interval of geologic time; each section is different from another in both lithology and paleontological composition. Here is proposed an alternative to single type sections: several type sections will be defined in the type area according to their completeness for zonation with one or more kinds of guide fossils.

La historia natural estuvo impregnada por ei pensamiento platónico (tipológico) en sus orígenes. Actualmente, la biología y la geología (sus disciplinas descendientes) algunas veces están marcadas por tal fundamento filosófico. La definición de estratotipo (por ejemplo, el viejo concepto de holoestratotipo) es un ejemplo de ésto. Sin embargo, la variedad es la norma en la Naturaleza. No hay ninguna sección tipo incluyendo todos los posibles fósiles guía para un intervalo específico de tiempo geológico; cada sección es diferente de otra en litología y contenido paleontológico. Los factores tafonómicos y paleoecológicos controlan la presencia o ausencia de los fósiles. Aquí se propone una alternativa a secciones tipo únicas: se definirán varias secciones tipo en el área tipo según su completitud para zonación con uno o más tipos de fósiles guía
