Temática apocalíptica en Francia y Castilla durante la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

La literatura apocalíptica es uno de los subgéneros menos conocidos de la literatura medieval en lengua romance, eclipsado principalmente por el rápido desarrollo de otros ámbitos de la literatura en lengua romance —el román en Francia o los poemas del Mester de Clerecía en Castilla, por no citar más que dos ejemplos—. Por otra parte, la cuestión principal de dicha literatura es un aspecto de la religión cristiana que se tradujo a las lenguas romances desde obras latinas anteriores, que son la fuente primaria de las versiones en castellano y francés que utilizamos como corpus de trabajo. En esta tesis proponemos una organización de la literatura apocalíptica medieval en lengua romance en función de los temas principales tratados en ella. Los tres temas principales, el Anticristo, los Signos del Juicio Final y el Juicio Final, constituyen el grueso de la producción apocalíptica medieval y forman, por tanto, el primer grupo temático de dicha literatura. El segundo grupo, por otro lado, cuenta con dos temas, el Último Emperador y los Pueblos Inmundos, que no constituyen un texto por sí mismo, sino que forman parte de otros textos mayores, como obras de historiografía medieval o secciones de otros textos apocalípticos.

The literature in French and Castilian Spanish has known a wide development in the Late Middle Ages. This development, with main examples as the roman in France or the poems from the Mester de Clerecía in Castille has overshadowed the apocalyptic literature which is the main theme of this thesis. The corpus of Apocalyptic Literature we have worked with in this thesis comes from early Latin, originated from the Christian Apocalyptic tradition. We propose, in this thesis, a new way to organise the Apocalyptic Literature in France and Castille in the Late Middle Ages based on the main themes displayed in the corpus. Thus, we have a primary group that includes three themes, and a secondary one, which includes just two. The main themes included in the first group are the Antichrist, the Signs of the Last Judgement and the Last Judgement. On the other hand, the second group contains two themes, the Last Emperor and the Unclean People.
